Basses Gorges / Quinson / Gréoux

Esparron-de-Verdon

A village on the shore of Lac d'Esparron, at the downstream entrance to the Basses Gorges du Verdon — a limestone canyon narrower and less visited than the Grand Canyon upstream, and a Natura 2000 site. The lake, calm and free of thermal-engine boats, and the lower gorges can be explored by canoe, kayak, pedal boat or licence-free electric boat for nearly 9 km up to Quinson — a more family-friendly and low-key alternative to the Grand Canyon du Verdon. Bus access via the Trans'Agglo network (DLVA): line 134 (on-demand service to Quinson, Saint-Laurent-du-Verdon, Montagnac-Montpezat, Riez) and line 136, a summer service from Gréoux-les-Bains and Manosque. Neighbouring communes: Allemagne-en-Provence, Montagnac-Montpezat, Saint-Laurent-du-Verdon, Quinson, Saint-Martin-de-Brômes and Saint-Julien-le-Montagnier (Var).

The electric boats are few and go quickly in summer: book in advance to avoid the queue and a wasted trip.

What to see, what to do

Château d'Esparron-de-Verdon
A square 13th-century keep with barrel-vaulted floors and a crenellated, corner-turreted top, listed as a historic monument; a 15th-century wing in Louis XII style and a façade rebuilt under Louis XIV, façades and roofs listed (order of 6 March 1979), north wing listed in full (order of 18 January 2013). Held by the Castellane family since the 1226 marriage of Agnès Spada to Boniface V de Castellane (except for a brief sale as national property in 1791, promptly bought back on the family's behalf), the château now belongs to Count Bernard de Castellane-Esparron, who converted it into a guest house with his wife Charlotte-Anne.
Église Saint-André d'Esparron
A Romanesque church with 17th-century alterations, its bell tower set directly on a rock outcrop; dedicated to Saint Andrew, with the added patronage of Saint Vincent (from a former priory of Lérins Abbey) and Mary Magdalene.
Aven de Vauclare
A Bronze Age offering shaft, part of the network of caves lining the Verdon that were occupied from Prehistory onward (Palaeolithic, Neolithic, then the Bronze and Iron Ages).
Hiking trails and the botanical trail
Four routes waymarked by the commune: the botanical trail, a loop of about 4 km (160 m of ascent) along the lake with panels on local flora; the Colle circuit and the Séouve-to-Sainte-Magdeleine trail (6 km each); and the Canal du Verdon au Quartier loop, 8.7 km from the Saint-Julien beach. The GR4 long-distance trail also crosses the commune.
Lac d'Esparron
An artificial reservoir of 328 ha (3.28 km²), filled in 1967 by the Gréoux dam on the Verdon, up to 55 m deep by the dam (80 million m³) — the Verdon's third-largest reservoir by surface area, after Sainte-Croix and Castillon. Thermal-engine boats are banned (only sailing and licence-free electric motors are allowed, the latter confined to the western part of the lake); canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, pedal boats and swimming take place in a zone regulated by municipal order. On the shore facing the village stand the remains of the old Canal du Verdon, dug under Napoleon III. The lake served as a filming location for the TV series Le Mystère du lac in 2015.
Basses Gorges du Verdon (Esparron-Quinson section)
Upstream of the lake, a limestone canyon narrower and less visited than the Grand Canyon du Verdon, designated Natura 2000, explored by canoe, kayak or licence-free electric boat for nearly 9 km up to Quinson. Navigation is regulated by inter-prefectural order (speed capped at 9 km/h, sailing and landing on the banks forbidden); the caves that shelter protected bat colonies, including the "grotte d'Esparron", are off-limits.
Albiosc
A once-independent commune, first recorded in 1103, merged into Esparron-de-Verdon in 1973 after repeatedly losing all its inhabitants since the late Middle Ages. It retains the Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens church, enlarged in the 18th century (with a listed clock and altarpiece). Archaeological digs (1997-1999, Centre Camille Jullian/CNRS) uncovered a hilltop Gallo-Roman settlement there (the Cadenet sites).

History of Esparron-de-Verdon

The area has been inhabited since Prehistory: the caves lining the Verdon have yielded traces of occupation from the Palaeolithic through the Neolithic and Bronze Age, with hillforts (oppida) on the Séouve plateau and at the confluence of the Colostre. A Gallo-Roman villa and a necropolis (excavated in 1931, 1951 and 1989) have been recorded near the hamlet of Albiosc, whose name several early authors linked to the Albici, a Gallic people from the Riez area. A "Castrum Esparronis" is mentioned as early as 439 as a watch post against barbarian invasions and then Saracen raids, driven off around 950. The château is first documented in 990 in the cartulary of Lérins Abbey; the castrum then appears regularly in the sources from the 11th century onward. In 1226, the marriage of Agnès Spada, lady of Riez, to Boniface V de Castellane brought the lordship to the Castellane family, which has held the château ever since apart from a sale as national property in 1791, promptly bought back on its behalf. The village lived off tolls levied on the transhumance route linking Arles and Lower Provence to the Alpine pastures, the Verdon being crossed by ford or boat until a bridge, funded by the city of Arles, was built in 1720.

Albiosc, twice as populous as Esparron in the early 14th century, was devastated by the Black Death and the Hundred Years' War: it stood empty from 1400 to the late 15th century, was modestly resettled, then depopulated again before merging into Esparron-de-Verdon in 1973. After Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte's coup d'État of 2 December 1851, thirteen inhabitants of Esparron and six of Albiosc were deported to Algeria for having defended the Republic; in 1944 the commune supplied a detachment of Francs-tireurs et partisans (FTP) resistance fighters, who sabotaged a high-voltage line. The filling of Lac d'Esparron in 1967, behind the Gréoux dam, flooded the old farming plain and cut the road and bridge that once led to Saint-Julien, in the Var. Since then, tourism tied to the lake and the Basses Gorges has become the commune's main activity, alongside farming built around viticulture (Pierrevert AOC), olive-growing and a lavender-distilling cooperative.
