Lac de Sainte-Croix

Les Salles-sur-Verdon

The only village sacrificed to the filling of Lac de Sainte-Croix: the old village was destroyed in February 1974, its inhabitants evacuated on 1 March 1974, and the church demolished 4 days later; the village was rebuilt further up, on the shore of the lake.

Travelling open-air cinema around the lakes of the Verdon and the Durance: free screenings of documentaries on shared water and the history of the dams. Organised since at least 2014 by the associations Cinéma de Pays and Culture Loisirs et Patrimoine (based in Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon), with the town halls, tourist offices and the support of EDF. Les Salles-sur-Verdon is one of the stopover municipalities listed on the organiser’s official page.

The former village was drowned when Lake Sainte-Croix was filled (1973), then rebuilt on the heights between 1973 and 1977. Fountain and wash-houses restored from remains of the former site.
