Grand Canyon du Verdon

Rougon

Perched village at the upstream entrance to the grand canyon (Point Sublime, Couloir Samson). Preserved medieval architecture (departmental tourism portal). Home village of Isidore Blanc, teacher and guide of the 1905 Martel expedition.

Castle ruins: access to the east face is permanently forbidden to anyone not authorised (unstable rocks, risk of falling stones). The ruins are reached by the west route, which has steep and potentially dangerous sections: wear suitable hiking footwear (sandals, flip-flops and town shoes are strongly discouraged) and keep young children under constant adult supervision; people prone to vertigo or with mobility difficulties are asked not to take this route. Everyone goes up at their own risk.

Vulture reintroduction site
The first 12 griffon vultures were released at Rougon on 16 October 1999; 91 have been released in total since then. Vultures can be observed from the village and the cliffs.

  • access/parking There is a charge for the Point Sublime car park from 30 April to 27 September 2026 (8:00–21:30), based on time spent: free for under 15 min, €1.50 for 30 min, €2.50 for 1 h, €4.50 for 2 h — bring the exact change.   • access/parking During French school holidays for zone B (Aix-Marseille education authority), parking is prohibited in the village, except in spaces reserved for people with disabilities (parking badge displayed); a stop of no more than 10 minutes is allowed for loading or unloading.
